Slow Start Plagues Macon in Loss to Birmingham

(PELHAM, Ala.) – The Mayhem couldn’t claw back after falling behind early, losing 5-2 to the Birmingham Bulls on Friday night.

Macon got off to a slow start, as Kevin Sadovski fired a silent wrister past Josh Boyko from behind the group of bodies at the face-off circle just 5:02 into the game, giving Birmingham a 1-0 lead. A few moments later, CJ Walker set up Danny Weight for a breakaway on Josh Boyko, which he made no mistake on and gave the Bulls some cushion before the intermission.

Birmingham gave the Mayhem an early power play in the second period, but mismanagement of the puck led to a shorthanded breakaway for MacGregor Sinclair, and he snuck a low shot past Boyko to extend the lead to 3 goals for Birmingham.  Later in the period, Stefan Miklakos was able to lift a rebound past Hayden Stewart and give the Mayhem some life heading into the third, trailing 3-1.

The Mayhem battled back in the third, but ultimately two goals separated by just 12 seconds extended the Birmingham lead to 5-1. Conor Witherspoon scored a power play goal in the late stages of the game to get his tenth of the season, but it didn’t save the result as Macon fell 5-2.

The Mayhem are in Birmingham again on Saturday, and return home for their annual School Day Game on Thursday, February 26 at 10:30 am.
