(PENSACOLA, Fla.) – Mason Hoehn, Philippe Caron, Matt Carlson, and Savva Smirnov all scored their first goal as a member of the Macon Mayhem en route to a 4-2 win as Dominic Basse took down his former team for the Mayhem’s first three points of the year.
The first period was similar to the one from the night before, with neither team being able to clearly establish the upper hand. Pensacola started out hot, but couldn’t sneak the puck past former Ice Flyer Dominic Basse in his first action with the Mayhem. After a string of chances for Pensacola, Macon flipped the script and ended an uneventful first period with their best stretch of play, and went to the break still searching for their first goal of the season, tied 0-0.
Unlike any of the four periods that preceded it this season, the second period was full of goals. It started with Mason Hoehn scoring the first of the season for Macon by picking up a blocked Parker Allison shot and rifling it past Rico DiMatteo to take a 1-0 lead. Then, the Ice Flyers evened the game up on the power play thanks to a strike from Jack Suchy. Just a few minutes later, Philippe Caron stuck with his own rebound and showed some patience as he waited for an opening before using a screen to his advantage, and giving the lead right back to Macon. Less than five minutes later though, Alex Dameski beat Dominic Basse’s glove and tied the game up once again. Both teams killed penalties before the end of the period, and entered the second intermission tied at 2-2.
The Mayhem wasted no time regaining their lead in the third period, as Matt Carlson took a great outlet pass from Cory Liu and went coast-to-coast, with a top shelf goal that would eventually be the game-winner. Savva Smirnov added a power play marker to provide some insurance as the Mayhem sealed the deal with a 4-2 win in Pensacola.
The Mayhem will travel to Athens on Friday, October 23 before hosting their home opener next Saturday night, October 24th, at 6pm ET vs the Birmingham Bulls at the Macon Coliseum. There will be a post-game skate with the team. Grab your tickets today by visiting maconmayhem.com.
