Goldowski’s Two Goals Not Enough Against the Storm

MOLINE, IL – The Macon Mayhem would make the long trip to their furthest opponent in the SPHL, the Quad City Storm. Although they are far apart geographically, Macon has been getting closer to the Storm for a coveted playoff spot.

Macon would threaten the Storm early as they started to build some momentum early in the contest. Quad City would get some chances of their own, but it would be Macon to strike first. On the powerplay, Rhett Kingston would nestle a pass into the left circle for Jake Goldowski, who would rocket home a one-timer to grab the Mayhem a 1-0 lead. The Mayhem would ring shots off the post twice in the period. Macon’s netminder Jimmy Poreda would make a few terrific saves to preserve that lead into the first intermission.

The Storm would be brewing in the second frame. Tommy Tsicos and Cole Golka would each score within one minute of each other to grab Quad City a 2-1 lead. Not to be outdone, Macon would tally yet again. With traffic in Brkin’s crease, Kingston would rip a shot that Brkin would initially stop, but Jake Goldowski was there yet again to stuff home a rebound to even the contest at 2. Unfortunately for the Mayhem, a lead-grabbing goal from Billy Jerry would be disallowed after a discussion with the off-ice officials. Quad City’s Leif Matson would score on a 5-on-3 powerplay to regain the Storm lead late in the period.

While on a delayed penalty, Cole Golka would score to double the Storm’s lead 4-2. Macon would get several quality changes as the period progressed but would be unable to convert. Finally, Macon would break through again as the newest member of the Mayhem Anthony Hora would take a shot from the blue line that would be deflected on by Tommy Munichiello. The momentum would be short-lived as Cole Golka finished off a hat trick just seconds later to restore the Storm’s two-goal lead. Quad City’s Logan Nelson would score to lock down a 6-3 Storm win.

Macon will have a chance to make things right against the Storm tomorrow night. Macon will return home for games next Thursday and Friday, against Birmingham and Roanoke respectively.
